I would imagine that after the car struck the trailer, the tires were skidding instead of rolling, negating any inputs from the computers (if it was even still functional post-impact)

Nope. The company has soooo much more responsibility in this issue. When Tylenol was being poisoned, the company pulled it off the shelf nationwide. When Rely tampons were causing toxic shock, P&G pulled the product and ran advertising telling people not to use it.
