That happened to me with Chrono Cross. The cutscene before the final dungeon wouldn't glitch out, and I couldn't play.
Adding Japanese to the other languages already being processed isn't as complex as you seem to think.
That's part of why an announcement like this is kind of frustrating because the PS3 is already pretty much universal. The only real difference between a US and JPN PS3 is a bit in the firmware that switches how the X and O buttons work and the default languages.
Do it Squenix... Give those of us who want to play this game on a TV that opportunity and help legitimize that little weird box at the same time.
