Settle down, Teddy Atlas
All fighters aspire to “fight angry.” Ali was better at this than anyone.
Watch him versus Cleveland Williams on YouTube. Williams never landed a punch. 3 rounds of beating.
In the latter half of his career, Ali was actually criticized for not finishing off overwhelmed opponents. There were complaints that he didn’t finish off Buster Mathis, and Ali said that he wasn’t going to hurt a man for the benefit of the writers, that he had to sleep at night. Same with the second fight against…
One (of the many) great things about his fighting style...he could punch, hard, even while leaning away from his opponent. If you watch the Thrilla in Manila, watch how many times he tags Joe Frazier with his weight on his back foot. Ali was something else.
It was meanness that beat Foreman. Ali went in there and basically said, “I’m going to give the fight you want, let you hit me however you want, it won’t be enough, and then I’m going to knock your ass out.” You can see it in Foreman’s face in the 7th and 8th round when he’s run out of gas and realizing that his best…
Terrific piece. Everyone is rightfully weighing in with their .02, but this is one of the best I’ve read so far. It’s stuff like this that keeps me coming back to Gawker. Refreshing perspectives on things lots of others have already written about, with the rare ‘breaking news’ piece on the side. It’s not mean-spirited…
Muhammad Ali was a Chobani guy.
I like all HamNo’s stuff but boxing does bring out the best in him.
Best piece you’ve written in a while
“Pursuing such a strategy by choice is like a baseball player deciding, after much deliberation, to start hitting pitches with his bare hands.”
This excellently sums up Ali’s unique greatness. Wonderful post, Hamilton.
Jill Stein is a progressive woman, they can vote against misogyny without supporting our continued slaughter of brown and black women abroad.
Oh no doubt there is. However, there are plenty of reasons to not be thrilled with Hillary Clinton if you are a liberal. Her foreign policy will be more of the same, so hope you like drone strikes against brown people. Gitmo will remain open for the foreseeable future. That said, it won’t be as bad as if crazy orange…
Absolutely. There are some gerrymandering cases working slowly through the courts that will address some of that. But midterms are a particular weakness of liberals right now.
The courts are the single most important institutuion in keeping the fucking bible humpers from taking over.
Take your facts and get outta here, you!
Well, the labor participation rate in the U.S. has been hovering around 62% for a while, so this means that Sanders donors are more likely than the average American citizen (16 years or older) to be in the workforce. Which makes sense, since they have money to donate. I don’t know if we can really draw many broad…
