Bernie has contempt for the base of the Democratic party, namely working class People of Color and women. There wasn’t one of those in his inner circle, and he showed open contempt for those demos multiple times. His primary backers were white males, including many journalists, who share that contempt.

Youth turnout is always crummy in American elections, and that was his strongest demographic. There was also some tilt toward Clinton, but that tilt wasn’t what beat him - it wasn’t ever really close enough for that gentle thumb on the scale to do more than run up the score a little. If he’d lost by 5 points or less…

Bernie strongly appeals to white liberals but not to PoC. He also got creamed in pretty much every important state (I think Colorado and Michigan were the only he did well in).

By the numbers? He bypassed an entire demographic in an entire region on a Super Tuesday and lost momentum for the entire Primary and couldn’t get it back because all races are proportional.
