Skype used to be fine but it has been left languishing in decline by Microsoft. I still use it only when I need to call a phone number abroad.
LINE is great. As you say really big in Japan but not uncommon in the rest of East and Southeast Asia.

Speaking as someone who has lived in China for over a decade, this stuff is scary to me, even if doesn’t currently seem to have the potential to affect me or my family.
In Chinese culture, perception is everything. As long as a business can project the perception of being fine, it “is” fine.
