In real world use condoms are not particularly effective, but with perfect use (which sounds like what you may have been practicing) they are.  Surprisingly there are a lot of people who do not use them correctly, and plenty of abusive partners who would purposefully sabotage.

They are still a thing but they’re less effective than an IUD is, plus if a woman has certain hormonal issues or what have you an IUD obviously can help while a condom cannot
