I think the recent step change in laptimes is nearly all tires. MT tested the Huracan Performante and gushed... But said they didn’t think the aero was as amazing as advertised. They did say the tires seemed sticker than just about anything they’d ever felt. Regardless, they absolutely loved it.

Agree. I think there has been a pretty big jump in tires in the last year or two. Lap times have seemed to fall in a way not commiserate with the vehicle specs/improvements. Cars are using all of their HP better than ever, but that’s been less recent of a development than the fall in lap times.

I feel like I remember reading the Volvo 240 didn’t see its first fatality until around 1990. That’s a bit hard to believe, but they were very safe relative to other cars. Today, they’re not as stout as the saferooms we call cars.
