For sure. It’s also worth noting that after the Revolutionary War was over, there were no plans to maintain a standing army. So you could argue that the U.S. military also fills the role that local militias would have, especially when you consider that they are often called in to help address local emergencies.

I don’t think we’ll have the luxury to forget him in a few years. I think he’ll be the GOP nominee for president in 2024, running on a platform of “I’m conservative, but I’m not Trump.”

This is the root of the problem. The NYT won’t get anywhere by trying to offer conservative points of view, because the Fox News crowd doesn’t care what’s actually in the NYT (or on CNN, etc.). They just need a demon to rail against, and the primary newspaper based in New York fits the bill.
