Isn’t it an issue of scale? Humans scamming other humans happens 1:1. An AI could do it 1:bajillion.
Humans are already scamming each other via telephone. What does this add to make it worse? Are you scared that AIs will be able to optimize their attack better than humans?
The creepiest thing to me is that it seemed so human like in it’s cadence, hesitation, and all that. So now... the only way to tell if someone is a human in the future is for them to talk like a robot so you know it’s not a robot.

Hype costs money. In the ‘60s and ‘70s, NASA had a lot of money and a lot of hype about what they were doing with it. Now? They’re the red-headed step child of federal agencies and what money they do get is tied up in less sexy programs because the stuff that excites the public is too expensive.
