I was on cross country in HS. The same team dynamics were there as well. I was one of the better runners, but not one of the top 5; witty/cool enough for the nerdier-than-most-sports-teams chic that goes with CC, etc. But we were bullies sometimes too.

(a) I think you're short-selling that "reputation for reliability" - that, along with its price point, is why it's so popular among small 4-door cars. You didn't use your horn? That might have gotten her attention more than flashing your lights, since obviously her visual attention was in her lap and not entirely on the road/mirrors. Of course light-flashing generally is preferable, horns are annoying, but they have their purpose.
I've heard discussion about battery-swap systems, where you drive in and swap your depleted battery out for a pre-charged one.
