Nah. I think the subtext was self-deprecating if anything. It wasn't "I'm not like these vain, shallow gays who care about fashion and clubbing," it was "If you think I'm gonna be your sassy gay friend who tears it up on the dance floor and gives you makeovers, prepare to be disappointed because I can't dress or dance

It seems to me that the author is writing a personal essay encouraging people to not, in general, lump marginalized or minority groups together, and is using his experience as a member of a traditionally marginalized group to get the point across. The people getting pissy and arguing that the author is trying to tell

No, it's not a baby. The question is, if he were pointing the gun at a baby would you have an issue with that or would it just be another joke? Pointing a gun (whether it's loaded or not) at a living thing sends a pretty strong message of violence whether the person intends it to or not.
