I think the emphasis was on avoiding things you HAVE to do. So if you decided you wanted to do some building or gardening then do it because it makes you feel good, not because you have to do it on your day off, if you can. This idea is full of snags and will vary from person to person.

When I was a new guy last year I had an amazing welcome from the existing team, so much so that only 3 weeks in I was able to give the next new guy an awesome welcome too. Because of that we created a really strong team ethic that the existing team had never had before.
