And the sun still rises in the east. I’m reminded of this answer (can’t remember where it came from though...) to the “are you a feminist?” question: What else is there to be? Everything else is an asshole. These are your choices.

Your claim that online harassment is not gendered (even if we just narrowed it to this industry) is not supported by actual data. Try again.
Tweeting back something like “you should be ashamed of yourself” is a good start.
HEY DUDES WHO WERE ALL “WHAT CAN I DO? HOW CAN I STOP THIS?” UPTHREAD. COME GET YOUR BRO.
We don’t care if you think she’s good at her job or not. That’s not what we’re talking about. It’s not what the video is about, or what this post is about. It’s about the harassment and threats of violence she receives for doing her job. You’re a dude, so you’ve been socialized to think your (irrelevant) opinion is…
You came into a story about two sports reporters making a point about the online harassment they face for doing their jobs just to say one of them sucks at her job.
You can’t directly stop him. But you can do your part in fighting the culture that enables people like him. Some concrete suggestions:
...do you really think this is the time for that? Or that anyone gives a shit? Did you just watch that video, of people saying the most violent terrible shit to her and think “This would be a good time to say she sucks!!”. What the hell is wrong with you?
You’re right, you can’t *directly* influence some random asshat on the Internet. You can, however, make sure that if you see/hear someone you know make a vile, misogynistic, sexist, or violent comment/threat towards a woman, that you say something or do something.
Your opinion doesn’t exist in a vacuum.
Don’t you think, maybe, there are better places to talk about how Sarah Spain sucks? Like, can’t you STFU about it when it comes to this one article?
Jesus, which hole in the sand have you had your head stuck in?!
Saying “but she sucks at her job” on an article about how a woman gets rape threats means you condone those rape threats because she is allegedly not doing a good enough job at her chosen career to please you. That is straight up a terrible thing to say and you are a terrible person if you think it’s ok to say this.
Nah man, it is a societal issue.
The societal issue here isn’t that some people are total abusive assholes—it’s that women aren’t trusted to report their own experiences.
Congratulations!!! You are being awarded a Gold Star for Missing The Entire Fucking Point.
It totally IS a societal issue though. That is WHY it happens. Because socially men think they can do shit like this and get away with it. It’s a social issue tied all up with the same reasons that women get raped and assaulted more than men do, and that we generally face more sexual harassment, and that this dumb and…
The thing is — this video will come as no surprise to any woman, but it obviously comes as a surprise to many men. They don’t have to worry or care about online harassment because their voices are the majority. Spaces are theirs to own.
So then the question is - if it’s a small majority of men, then why the hell has almost *every* woman experienced something similar? Even if it’s just an incredibly small minority of men, if that minority is disproportionally affecting a majority of women, is that not then a societal issue?
