Get's good(/passable) around the middle of season one before falling off a cliff at the end.
Season two is better in most ways, worse in a few. Ratings are still down, however. Really don't see a third season happening at this point.
First episode (pilot) was written and directed by different people than worked on the rest of season 1 iirc. It got much better around the middle of the season before getting shitty again at the end.
Movie sucked. I could never get past Mal's futurey plastic suspenders or the hover-mule.
The first half of S1 suffered from "problem of the week" syndrome (except that said problems sometimes stretched over two or three weeks). I feel like that drove away a lot of potential watchers. Whole civilians vs. military thing was pretty stupid as well.
People are horrible.
Buy a used one. Lots of people with more money than sense will decide on a whim that they want to learn how to throw pots and will buy the best wheel available, use it twice, then get rid of it.
