If the fabric is fraying, and the garment otherwise is in good shape, replace the zipper.

I picked up a really nice hoodie at a thrift store a couple years ago. It has the pull on the left side. Takes a bit of getting used to. Gotta remember to pull it down with my left hand, instead of my right, so it pops loose when it gets to the bottom.

I gotta say my method is fairly similar: I assemble and paint Warhammer miniatures (and seldom play games with them, unfortunately).
