Yeah, I was surprise that they included a Chinese character (Mei) in the initial roster. Not many games have Chinese characters that don’t specifically take place in...China...or Chinatown.
People want someone to aspire to, that they can identify with, that reflects the best of who they wish to be. And in a game, a visual medium, the image of body, culture, style and even color is especially important in creating an anchor... an Avatar.
A black woman character, I think, would add a nice variety to the game. Something I love about overwatch is that each character brings their culture to the game in one way or another. Hearing them say their voice lines in their native language is pretty cool to me. It brings the characters to life.

I hope I’m not all-lives-mattering this conversation, but it can feel kind of America-centric. OW still doesn’t have any Asian men from anywhere outside of Japan, which obviously has a fraught history with a bunch of other Asian countries.
There’s a saying, “To be African American is to be African without history and American without privilege.”
All the above can be applied to Latinos of all kinds in games. We have been reduced normally to Born in East LA stereo types
