And what Ali did was beyond what most conscientious objectors did: He did not dodge, he went to jail for his convictions AND he lost some prime earning years. And he could have/would have served as a figurehead and likely not seen action.
My dad was a Vietnam vet. Three purple hearts and a bronze star. He hated Jane Fonda with a passion but other than that, he understood and respected concientious objectors.
