See, I really don't believe that. GM's and Chrysler's argument during the bailout was pretty much scaring the people into pressuring the govt to give them more money. How everyone is going to lose their jobs, how the economy will be destroyed if they disappear.
If you want to twist the logic, yes.
You are correct in the sense that yes, the American car companies were in the shitter during that period. However, foreign investors and companies did have the means (if given the opportunity) to get said companies.
