That is what brought it to mind. Kojima seems to enjoy having a central theme not just to the games but to the bosses as well. Why not flip the script a bit and have his friends/allies have a theme this time?

Looks like it works much like their Video store demo thing they've had out forever. Can't remember the exact name of it. Probably used that demo and brought look/feel/features over from it to the actual store. Once in use the scrolling letter scheme is actually kind of awesome.
