Very strange that the prosecution could claim a murder happened, Steven did it, but they don't exactly know how and have evidence that doesn't help clear things up. There's no smoking gun here and Steven got locked up anyway. It's all very fishy.

Exactly. The defense couldn't press the Lenk angle too hard unless they were ready (and had the evidence) to officially accuse him as Teresa's murderer. The defense was trying REALLY HARD to say Steven didn't do kill Teresa but not claim they knew who might have.
What really kept me up at night (by the way, DO NOT watch this documentary before you go to sleep) was trying to imagine how and when Teresa Halbach was taken.
