“Domestic abuse is terrible and I want to make art that graphically depicts the reality of men treating women as property and believing they can do whatever they want with them. What? Did I ask the subjects for permission to use the photos for this campaign? Hell no. Fuck those bitches.”

“The biggest accomplice of violence is the silence...”

Sigh. I really hate this. The thing is, though, he’s put people in positions that if they try to verbalize why his images are exploitive, misleading, and tone-deaf, he can always come back with, “You’re just not supportive of the cause,” or some other such dumbshit and derail the conversation.

Since the first day, I’m pretty sure.

Hasn’t it...always said that, though?

But Jezebel is so political now. No more fashion or food fluff pieces any more. Just hard-core politics. So politics.

I’m so sick of “awareness” campaigns. We’re all aware of domestic violence, breast cancer, etc. Stop pushing awareness and start pushing solutions and cures.

This is a power and control wheel. If your partner exhibits some of the behavior on this chart you may be a victim of Domestic Abuse.

He's not an artist. He's a guy that knows photoshop. And also cashing in on female celebrities fame. Lame dude, really lame. Go do something that is actually creative. This does nothing to help victims of domestic violence either. Let's forget this guys name and instead celebrate some really talented female artists.

The title implying that life is utopian after DV is also incorrect and insensitive.

This is dumb. It would be more effective if you created a campaign with celebrities who were victims of DV telling the stories, if you must use celebrities to get attention. Kim is used in the campaign and she was a victim of domestic violence. Her first husband was brutal to her. I think Kim telling her story, along

What is this #briefmessage thing? “Hey ladies, it’s international women’s day and all so I’d like you to post a picture of your panties on the internet. It’s for activism so you should probably try and write something on them. No, it literally doesn’t matter what you write, just as long as you spend a stupid amount of

Awareness isn’t really about changing the minds of abusers, but rather providing help for victims. There are two facts about domestic abuse that people raising awareness need to focus on.

My major issue is that Kim (I know little about Miley) is married. If her battered face is becoming a poster example of domestic violence, wouldn’t that imply Kanye beats women?

While I think the intent of this campaign is important, I somehow get the message that being a victim is more important if you are famous and is something we fake to make a point.

It’s also worth noting how incredibly shitty and poor-quality his art pieces usually are. Like, I am literally impressed that he managed to manipulate Photoshop effectively enough to produce these ads.

I doubt very much that public awareness efforts encourage abusers to stop abusing, but such campaigns do help victims understand they are not alone and encourage them to seek help. They also prompt people to contribute funds and time to Domestic Violence programs. As an advocate and a survivor, I can assure you that

It doesn’t work. Fuckers have been using Rihanna’s battered face for jokes for years. They aren’t going to care if they just don’t care. Seeing some pretty celeb with her face busted up isn’t going to make them care about domestic violence.
