I found one moment in the documentary very telling in explaining that: when Keyke Burns was sitting in her bedroom in front of all her prom photos, and pointed to a photo of her elementary school prom (which I didn’t even know was a thing?) and said “see, they even segregated us in elementary school...whoa, and I

I have a picture like this as well! Taking one for the team, haha.

Let’s not act like all instances of “Romeo and Juliet” exceptions aren’t “truly rape”. A 14-year-old is not “close to the age” of 18. Please.

As a kid who grew up in a partially segregated southern town, you know it’s wrong but what are you going to do about it?

Unfortunately racists will use similar maps outlining relatively higher black populations to imply that black people are responsible - rather than understanding that the history of systemic and institutional discrimination against black people, combined with policies that hurt the poor, can result in the above maps.

Yeah, I can’t be the only one who was like - I mean, it’s not OK to shoot people, but also I’d be pretty alarmed to wake up at 3am to find this going on in my house...

Tradition is held in very high self esteem in the South. You’ll have families who seem modern in every way...who then ask my mom in shock that my dad trusts her with “that much money” when she leaves to go buy a ton of furniture for the new house...out of state. I have a friend who’s progressive in a lot of ways...but

wtf idiots, Im not commenting on the murder, but lazy writing that casually glosses over a fucking rape. goddammit

Most of Northern Europe is totally blase’ about religion. They’re largely Protestants in name only. The American Protestants are more devout and more conservative. By huge margins.

These are the same people who grow up and utter the “...but I’m not racist” trope when confronted with their segregated mindset. So...at least we know where they are coming from (not geographically but mentality-wise).

I find it weird to be proud of anything you didn’t actually do and/or don’t do. But yeah, I don’t see why “We crushed it via slaves and we are not Yankees” are things to be aggressively, even religiously, proud of. But there are people a-plenty who lack pride in self and, instead, find its weak substitute in all kinds

In the South a LOT of Protestants are Evangelical Protestants, who are the craziest of Christians.

you do realize since shes 14 she cant consent right? We don’t ask kids if they wanted the sex, that’s “immaterial” too.

Protestants have a HUGE range of beliefs, from super liberal to super conservative. A majority of Christians who are not Catholic are Protestant, and that includes Baptists, Methodists, Evangelicals, Presbyterian, Lutheran, etc.

I’d argue the “sane” Christians are Roman Catholics. Yes, they still lag behind in women’s issues, gay rights and contraception, but compared to American Protestants they are downright enlightened and progressive.

They live with their backward and racist parents. It informs everything that they think and do. Sure, they can coexist with black kids on a very harmless day to day level but at the end of the day they aren’t any smarter than their parents so they just go with “tradition.” And even if some of them thought that it was

This is really weird. I’m listening to the photo essay audio and completely confused by how a group of teenagers in this day and age can truly claim to be friends with black people, be totally integrated, eat lunch with them, hang out with them socially, and yet a segregated prom is like not even a blip on their

Just what the hell is this Southern Pride bullshit? I’m from the South myself - Louisiana - and am clueless as to exactly what it means. Most of the South’s past is hardly worth being proud of. What the ever loving fuck already? I am proud of my state’s food and overall warmth of its citizens, if that counts for

Justin’s brother, 18, had sex with another girl at the house, just 14.
