It's just a short boat ride over from Drinkin' Island.

The genre (or whatever you want to call it) as a whole could use more levity. And just emotion in general. If your teenage characters aren't occasionally gripped with irrational passions, you're doing it wrong.
I feel like the 'YA can be legitimate art too!' crowd is jumping at shadows at this point: no one's arguing the opposite, except for the occasional contrarian thinkpiece that quickly gets hammered by the pro-YA group that vastly outnumbers the haters. There's certainly no momentum behind the opposite opinion: even its…
Constructed-world fantasy never seems to get the YA label, even when it's got the same themes and character types: still too geeky for establishment acceptance, for various reasons, some of them self-inflicted. (I say that as a fan.)
Interesting comparison. Also, 'rockist' isn't just seen as a different school of thought, it's a straight-up insult, an accusation of snobbery and out-of-touch geezerdom and racism/sexism for good measure.
I think there should have been more action cartoons here, but Dragonball Z was just…not very good. I like it on occasion, but I can still recognize it's not that good. Everyone thinks fondly of it because they saw it when they were eight. I think it's hilarious that Kai's selling point was "We cut out all the crappy…
Yeah, it's like visiting New York City and wondering why everyone's swearing so much.
Well, sure, because if a 40-something white guy from suburban Texas was an eloquent conduit for liberal views, they'd accuse Judge of sacrificing realism and character just to preach. And they'd be right. I'm a liberal and I don't need Hank Hill to be one too.
Some thoughts:
Yeah, I think pretty much everyone here would agree with that. John Green gets more respect from critics because he's a realist, but that's not some new thing cooked up to defame books written by women. The establishment has never taken 'genre fiction' seriously, and critical response to Green vs. Meyer has the weight…
Yeah, I think even people who don't like The Hunger Games or Harry Potter don't talk about Collins and Rowling the way they talk about Meyer. And not without reason.
I'm just confused about why some letters got runners-up and some didn't. Especially B and F where there's an embarrassment of riches.
Almost all of these are comedies, sitcoms, or really jokey action series, which is predictable as it's more in line with the AV Club writers' wheelhouse, but separate lists for comedy vs. action or drama would have been interesting.
I'd be very tempted to give Attack on Titan a spot for the animation alone, I just wish the plot didn't drag so much: season two especially feels like it could have been reduced to 4-5 episodes.
Stuff like this is never not gonna be controversial, though. I don't get that vibe here, but that's a subjective thing. I guess I'm just sick of that argument being used so much: it's basically like calling someone a hipster at this point. If you're assuming someone is saying something just to piss people off, you're…
YOUR HERESY SHALL BE PAID FOR WITH BLOOD, HEATHEN! TO THE PYRE OF JUDGMENT WITH YOU!
That's the whole point, isn't it? Do you think any of these writers think they've delivered the final word, no room for discussion? They know that there's more to great animated shows than can be listed in a themed alphabetical countdown, and they're assuming the comments section will fill in the blanks. If they…
It's a subjective opinion about pop culture offered by people who are paid to do that. If you're taking this as some kind of definitive last word on the subject, that's on you, because I don't think any of the writers see it that way.
Can everyone just shut the fuck up about clickbait? If you disagree with the list, fine, so do I. But just how arrogant do you have to be to assume any opinion different than yours is a calculated, cynical effort to stir up controversy?
Also, Internet Law clearly states that saying you like something automatically implies that you hate everything else, and that no one else is allowed to like it, so publishing this list was a real dick move.
