Officially, the drone was used in a NATO/ISAF mission over Afghanistan and thus the US technically isn't responsible. Also, according to ISAF, the drone was flying over west Afghanistan. Should the story about GPS spoofing be correct, then the drone wouldn't have been spying on Iran at all.

Apple and Samsung probably also have long(ish) term contracts about these processors. This would ensure Samsung to get their investment paid for, and Apple to have a steady stream of components.
