It's a pity people wanted Han Solo to be a cold-blooded killer, since that is so out of character with the wholly altruistic and kind Han we meet early in the film.
On airing pilots: I know they've done this a few times in the UK: air a pilot on BBC3 and pick up the series depending on the ratings and reception it gets.

I watched the first few episodes of this, then forgot to keep watching. I did the same thing with The Killing, watching the first two episodes and nothing beyond that.
It was in the bottom ten that season (#71) - but more amazingly, its premiere was dead last in the ratings: 77 out of 77. Yet it was allowed a full season and renewed.
Sulu's first name, Hikaru, also originated from the books. There are also two Voyager books that are supposedly canon (or were considered canon at the time), Pathways and Mosaic by series writer Jeri Taylor. But I'm not sure if anything in them was mentioned in-series.

I'm pretty sure mo-cap performances were ineligible when LOTR came out, maybe they still are now? I think the rule is you have to appear on screen, thus ruling out mo-cap and voice over performances.
