I’m not trying to prove a point other than to say that the Academy has done a better job of recognizing POC within the past 20 years, and that acting nominations these past two years are exceptions, not the rule.

But I would argue that at least since 2000, the Academy HAS recognized work by African-Americans within the industry. These past two years have been exceptions, not the rule. Since everyone is focusing on the acting categories, since 2000 the following AA performers have been nominated: Denzel Washington, Will Smith,

You'll enjoy a rather lengthy article in Jan. 11 issue of the New Yorker about studios that shoot for mid-range movies with domestic and international appeal. What's also relevant to this conversation is that the lead in one of the movies currently in production was first offered to Will Smith for $2 million per

Worldwide box office to date for SOC is $200.4 million. For Mad Max Fury Road it's $375.8 million.

It's not possible. This year, more than 380 films met the Academy's criteria for consideration. Remember, the Academy has 17 branches and each branch only nominates and votes within its own area. The only category in which everyone can vote is Best Picture. So only the acting branch nominates and votes on acting

You need to watch Reese's 2014 film The Good Lie. She plays an employment counselor helping to relocate and settle Sudanese refugees. Her co-stars are Arnold Oceng, Ger Duany and Emmanuel Jal. Arnold is Ugandan. Ger and Emmanuel are Sudanese.

And if this doesn’t work, then what? This also seems to imply that African-American, Asian-American and Hispanic actors who join the Academy are going to automatically nominate other minorities for awards, which is insulting. The Academy should follow BAFTA's lead in the major categories - wherein for Best Actor, for

I’m sorry, but you’re incorrect on the number of people in the actor’s branch of the Academy. There are 17 branches of the Academy with a total membership of just more than 6,000. The actor’s branch is the most diverse of the 17, and only members of the actor’s branch can nominate and vote in the acting categories.

For Reese, you’re forgetting 2014's The Good Lie. She plays an employment counselor trying to find work for Sudanese refugees. All of the other principal actors in the film were people of color.

Since 1995 12.5% of the past 20 Academy Award recipients in the acting category were African-American.

I disagree with your contention the Academy ignores performances by African-American performers unless the films deals with slavery or civil rights. Since the 2000s (and I can go back further), African-American actors and actresses were nominated (and some won) for performances in films like Flight, Doubt, The Curious
