Boredom is a thing for cars. This is a car enthusiast website so it is more populated with people who buy cars for fun than just transportation.

Agreed. If it’s really “the car” it’s worth it.
I get tons unsolicited offers for my old jeep all the time. The combo of a rare color, all options, bone stock(outwardly), and perfect condition helps. I’d sell it but the wife wants to keep it.
What could possibly go wrong with this plan?
Volvo’s permanently sealed automatic transmission from the old 850 was a doozy of a bad idea. But what if an entire car, due to its disposable nature, is unserviceable:
You could fill this list with nothing but early Diesel engines. The VW Rabbit Diesel (also used in the Transporter.) The Chevette Diesel. The GM 5.7 Diesel. The Oldsmobile 4.3 Diesel. The GM 6.5L Diesel. The naturally aspirated mechanical injected Ford 7.3L Diesel (Actually, an International engine.) The Ford 6.0L…
There is a difference between a ‘weak’ engine and a ‘bad’ engine. The Iron Duke was certainly weak. It was never bad. They are bulletproof, easy to work on, and will last nearly forever with regular maintenance. The world is full of examples of fancy, high-power engines that regularly detonate unless absolutely…
I’d take the 3800, the 302 and the Cologne 4.0 OHV off that list. They’re very dependable engines.
My dad owned a 2dr GL Sport with the HO engine for 7 years but it had the 5 spd manual. What a day-night difference compared to a relative’s Tempo with the regular HSC engine and 3 spd. It’s been the car he has owned for the most time (1st place: a Ranger he owned for 9 years) and proved very reliable. It outperformed…
I’ll disagree with the 4.0L in the Explorer. It was inline with the power output of the competition of the day. It was nearly unbreakable. It had enough torque. Dunno where its speed limiter was set at, but from empirical testing you could slam into it pretty hard, even on a hill.
Or afford.
I was gonna say, in my experience with Mercedes drivers, I can totally see one not noticing a tree in the road.
You guys are jumping on DT while leaving out (disingenuously?) a major portion of his project write ups.
London City bus? No thanks. I’m holding out for a Van Hool T925 double-decker, known by the kids as the MEGABUS. Something that could run comfortably at highway speeds.
I don’t need AWD or 316hp. Can I just have one with 200-250hp and FWD, with a 6spd? With GTI suspension and plaid seats. I’d cheerfully pay $35K or so for it.
Pretty much any CRX would be good.
I’m mildly intrigued by this 2012-13 Impala action. That’s a heck of a sleeper.
I intended to post a picture of a Mazda 5. Probably not the best choice either, really, and no idea if they’re under $5k, but certainly a sleeper.
I was at a Lexus dealer this weekend to get the 2018 RX I purchased three weeks ago inspected; it’s a requirement here that you have to get any car you buy inspected within a month of purchase. The service writer asked if I was interested in trading it in.
I see a Mk 1 Ford Cortina in those pictures, possibly a Lotus going by the green and white paintjob.
