Laptops have been our "tablets" for a while now. The ipad and similar devices would only reclaim their rightful share of the laptop market. So yes, the numbers (laptops) would fall, but only for a bit.

people who buy ipads already have a computer so many are repeat buyers imo. weird this story comes up now, my aunt just went to best buy to buy an ipad a few hours ago. she already bought a netbook a few months ago though, one of them fancy hp tam thingies.
