But yeah, Fallout is my RPG spirit animal. One of the first rpgs I ever played, defined the genre for me.
Duke Nukem 3d did much the same for FPSs for me.

In the other ones the fail state in enforced upon you. You made a mistake, and there is a reaction for that. Even if it’s an immediate reset, it’s still a reaction from the game.
Gone Home only ever has one interaction with the player; progress. The game doesn’t react to the player going back to the foyer, nor does it…

There is no state besides “advance forward” in gone home. There is no reset, despite your attempts at sarcasm. Nothing happens except moving forward. There is nothing to game in Gone Home. There is nothing to improve out, nor is there any form of decision making.
