I think it was intentional - he was about ready to tell Liv about his zombie-freezing, but Liv was busy. Then he sees Gilda/Rita and says, "Goodnight … Rita" knowing that Liv knows Rita is the woman he was sleeping with. He couldn't tell her everything, but wanted to at least tell her *something*.
