@devilbear: There's two ideas going on here: superheroes in their own mythos confronting the various ends of super-villain plans—aka the Killing Joke, and superheroes as an actual problem-solving force in reality, aka Captain America fighting in WW2.

How is any problem for the heroes to solve going to be bigger than the threat of Nuclear annihilation?
