@Pomonarona: True, I was just thinking about how this wasn't much of a problem in my Eastern European city. The default setting was scowl. Creepyness happened in other ways, but not generally in that "smile!" or leering customer service kinda way.

I don't think it's ominous that royal reps haven't really commented on this conclusively. They don't tend to get into the dirt with the tabs over every single photo, how could they? They'd have to do that 24/7.
