I’m in a similar boat, except instead of sticking with Mac because of that dilemma, that’s one of the main reasons I switched to Android. Pushbullet and several other free add-ons work pretty well doing the same thing as iMessage can do with a Mac, although not nearly as perfectly :(

Hangouts doesn’t require you to convince anyone to use the app in order to enjoy it. It supports SMS/MMS, as well as voice and video calling to phones. It also has Google Voice integration, so it’s far superior to iMessage.

If that’s the only reason, why can’t you use something like AirDroid? Since you said your friends and family use SMS to communicate with you, iMessage can’t be one of the main reasons for not switching to Windows/Android, since SMS will continue to work. Or am I missing something?
