Really, there was no point for ground combat in the forest. The Imperials would have burned vast clearings around their bunkers to avoid scenarios like in the film — it’s not like they tried hiding their location. Also, since they happened to have a fleet in place, some well-aimed orbital barrages would’ve been handy.

I always rationalized the empire’s very visible armor was a way to send a message to their enemies, that they are so powerful that they don’t care about hiding and covert tactics, they WANT for you to know that they are coming.
