The show is half modeled after Blaxploitation films, on top of being a comic book property. It's part of the package IMO.

Could have easily been touching on how Bernard lost a child and seems to be focusing a lot on robotics to fill that void or even correct it.

Death does matter though. It's the echoes of death which is every bit as traumatic as it is for a human being which are causing the hosts to slowly become aware, and it's going to be all of those deaths in the name of entertainment which is going to be the catalyst for a Big Robot Rebellion™.
