This principle is an excellent one, but a very old one. Aristotle explained how this works in the Nicomachean Ethics 2,300 years ago. Though, since only philosophy students seem to read the Ethics these days, it is good to see it repackaged.

But there are three types of goods - the useful, the pleasurable, and the beautiful. Does the author mean to dismiss objects that bring us pleasure but that are not useful or beautiful? This might be good advise, but I think I will be holding on to my Playstation for a while longer anyway.
