It may be generational... I grew up hearing and using “jip” / “gyp” (however you spell it, it’s not a word that tends to be used in writing) with exactly that meaning. If it was an offensive reference to some culture, I certainly wasn’t aware of it, and I suspect most of my peers were the same.
