Lori's death was like a self fulfilling prophecy... she kept talking like it would either she or the baby would die and refused to accept the possibility they could both survive.
She died before Maggie walked away with the baby. We saw that. Lori's dead. Whether or not Carl shot her so she wouldn't be a zombie is the question, but I'm certain they only went to Maggie because they didn't want to show Carl shooting his mom.
