I don’t even trust Tesla autopilot in most circumstances. I cannot fathom why people pay 10-12k for something that could definitely crash your car if you don’t pay attention. Riding in a car with self driving you can’t trust is way more stressful than just driving for yourself. FSD deserves to be sued into oblivion…

I use ‘autopilot’ in stop and go traffic and it works. I wouldn’t trust it other than that. Even then I’m still hovering over the brake and holding the wheel... so I’m not totally sure it’s saving me much mental energy.

My theory is at some point self-driving will become too big to fail, and instead of fixing it they’ll start expecting everyone else to adapt. Witness all the suggestions that pedestrians really should wear radio beacons so cars know where they are, and maybe pedestrians who don’t are irresponsible and it’s their fault…

They don’t have to get to level 5. All the need to do is call it Beta and let their customers lose lawsuits when the damn thing crashes and say “if you had been paying attention, you would still be alive.”

That is actually becoming part of the model design for some brands of EV. Not just able to replace them but upgrade them. For example, if they can make them smaller/lighter but same output you suddenly could add more and extend the range.
