Yeah. Car dealers have brought this on themselves with their hard-sell antics and refusal to change with the times.

You are right. It’s not a $50k car because they all have $6k markups now and you won’t find a single one for <=$50k

people who are really worried about crazy gas prices probably aren’t able to afford a new car anyways, so it’s a moot question of ice vs electric.

I laugh at all these people debating adding level 2 or 3 chargers to their homes, thinking that’s the only problem. I live in NJ. We had a minor heat wave last weekend, where it hit about 90 degrees both saturday and sunday. Blackouts and power outages because everyone was running their already installed air

That wouldn’t need to be the standard everywhere. Most people I’m guessing would be satisfied with similar performance to refueling with gas, 300-350 miles in 5-10 minutes.

If I had a PHEV or IC as a backup then sure I could make due with a limit of 40 miles of driving per day. But, now my cost of ownership includes owning and maintaining a second car.

Many people live in older homes that can’t support a charger without major electrical system work. I am in that boat with TWO homes. I can buy a hell of a lot of gas for what it would cost me at either house, and I don’t drive all that much.

I’d argue this is the biggest deterrent for EVs at the moment, even if would be buyers don’t realize it.  I’ve spoken to many people that have offered several reasons why they don’t want an EV and I always say “what if you got 250-300mi of range but could top off in 5 minutes like a gas car?” and they all think about

This.

500 mile ranges and/or 5 minute recharge times are going to be the tipping point. If automakers can’t get there with a reasonably priced vehicle the EV revolution is not going to happen as advertised.

You’ve got valid points, but there’s a scale problem. A rich person buying a $60-$80k Tesla is one thing, someone making $50k/yr that lives in an apartment and has no charger outside buying a BEV is another. Someone who lives in southern Cali that doesn’t have to worry about cold related range issues is one thing,

maybe we should apply that to the oligarchs that are ruining all our lives

You’re defending this by comparing it to the build quality of prototypes from 70+ years ago from a long since dead manufacturer notorious for terrible build quality? Is this low rate sarcasm?

Comparing this to a then brand new operation with barely enough money from about 75 years ago . . . yeah, that’s valid. How low a bar do we need to set for this 50 year old tween?

This deserves all the (somewhat aligned) stars

The production models have pretty poor build quality, even 22 models.  it’s improving a bit on the gaps, but the cheap plastic and wiggly interior parts are still there.

While the stars might align, Tesla body panels never will.

If anything, that would make me MORE worried since it’s built by hand by people who KNOW that it’ll be a demo/shown to the public, and they still didn’t give enough of a shit to make the panels line up.

Stock price doesn’t affect the cash you have on hand though, unless I’m missing something.

Since when has Wall Street ever operated on “wise long-term moves”?
