Basil can turn very bitter once it bolts, flowers and seeds. Stalks and older leaves can also be soapy or bitter.

This is similar to what the iphone7 does to produce fake Bokeh/DOF.

Uniform blur (not dependant on distance from the camera) tends to look somewhat artificial compared to genuine shallow DOF.
