Have you considered giving your female children the mother’s surname and the male children the father’s surname? Seems equitable to me.

I’m Canadian. I have deep sympathy for half the US population, and disgust for the other half. Any laughter up here is what you might call gobsmacked and hysterical, like someone hallucinating while watching Terms of Endearment.
