I seem to recall him sort of raging - albeit somewhat subtly -against his part in that show & how there was little interesting that they could do with his character, etc given the constructs of it at some junctures in print. You're largely right (his performance was largely laconic & sparkless to me on that -

I think it was the TV show he was on where he played so (largely) middle of the road in the times I caught it. In just about everything else, Jason Segel has displayed said streak rather palpably.

I seem to recall around a two page spread in Newsweek(?) in anticipation of the movie coming out which caught my eye. It piqued my interest as a fan of The State when I was a teen but I didn't catch the movie itself until it showed up on premium cable in early Summer of 2003, I think. Loved it obviously.
