Of course! Don't you know slavery would have ended WAY sooner if all the white people who supported ending it would have just shut the fuck up?!??

Yeah, I guess he would generate much more support for these causes if he were to just shut the fuck up, right? I mean, jeez - who the fuck does he think he is, supporting other people who are not like him or as privileged as him? What an asshole for supporting and trying to generate even more support for them!!!

Being public about one's support for a cause isn't necessarily doing it to help build that person's image. It could be, you know, doing it to generate even more support for the cause. From what I know Macklemore has donated a lot of money towards certain causes, but yet he's not going around shouting about how much

It's like people here think slavery would have ended sooner had all the white people in support of ending it just kept the fuck quiet.

Isn't the goal of acceptance to be accepted by all people, not just people like oneself? So, when a person outside of a certain community (say, LGBT) learns to accept and recognize them as normal people with rights just like everyone else, the more respectable thing for them to do is to just ignore the issue and keep

Exactly - jezebel (and so many of the commenters here) seems to be saying "If you are a straight white male, we don't want your support! STOP IT!" I mean, the ultimate goal is to get the support of everyone, right? As in, acceptance of LGBT people should be acceptance of them by everyone - not just other LGBT people

He's a straight white male - what more do you need to know?

You never said you were from Detroit?: "I'm sick of asinine people making shitty comments about where I am from when they have no idea." - the conversation is about Detroit. This comment would indicate you are saying you are from Detroit. If you do not live - or did not grow up in Detroit - then this person is not

Slowing and proceeding through if the intersection is clear is not the same as "blowing through". I know plenty of people who do that.

Still, you (at this point) have no evidence or proof that she was actually never convicted. You stated it as fact.

You are correct in that Detroit is a huge place with some very dangerous areas and that Downtown (Theater District down to Jefferson) is not the most dangerous area. That area is a very small area of Detroit. Most of the rest of Detroit is much more dangerous than that area (as you point out) - so saying that being in

Dismiss all you like, you're still a racist, sexist asshole.

Oddly enough, none of the problems I encountered ever happened in the Cass Corridor (historically one of the worst areas) - but I know plenty of people that had problems there.

Cultural Center, Medical Center Area, Corktown, Cass Corridor, Trumbull / Grand River area, Hamtramck.. Hamtramck was by far the safest area - love that little city-within-a-city..

Not sure how your response is relevant to this specific conversation, as the topic is about calling factual statements about Detroit "racist" and "classist". The incident happened in Dearborn heights (and yes, I realize the original comment at the top is misinformed about location), but this subthread is specifically

Very true. Good to hear your experience has been different..! :^)

The attitudes of the cops in Detroit are not limited to only cops in Detroit; they are pretty widespread as far as the surrounding areas go.

As I said, I agree with you regarding opening the door. Even if he was more "frantic" about someone knocking on his door, having lived in Detroit and the surrounding areas I would guess the cops would still be rather apathetic to the situation.

Having lived in Detroit, I can say that calling the cops for that - and even more severe situations - would not necessarily spark much urgency on their part, unfortunately. In my experience there, the cops are generally pretty apathetic.

You said doldrums' original comment was racist and classist. It is not. Detroit is fucked. While living there, I have been mugged on my doorstep for a bottle of beer. I have had someone climbing in through my car window at a stoplight. I have had a gun pulled on me over a parking space. My girlfriend was beaten beyond
