It's probably been an ongoing battle. Some systems are under the New Republic, but others are probably still being held by what's left of the Empire.

When the Senate was disbanded, regional governors and Moffs took over sectors of the galaxy. Even with the Emperor, the Death Star, and portions of the fleet destroyed, one presumes each governor would have millions of troops and lots of armaments at hand.

When you think about it, the Empire ruled the entire galaxy before the destruction of the second Death Star. It makes sense that there would be more than enough forces left elsewhere to rally under a new banner and hold out for a long time to come.

I still have them, and have read them regularly over the years. I fell in love with Han Solo at first sight in '77, and those books just fed my preteen fangirling. =D
