I always thought the pluralizing was intentional, with the older monikers for the United States as a whole emphasizing the individual members of the union (like "These United States" or "the several States").

That uptick is internet nerds who noticed this very thing and started grammar nazing about it. Nazing is now a verb too.

Media is also a plural noun, but I'm the only person I'm aware of (plus my professor) who says "The Media are always accused of bias, etc."
