@drewg: I don't think you need to make it persistent. From what I read in the guide, programs will be stored temporarily in a /tmp folder, or somewhere near that. If you are fixing a computer that has no connection to the internet, Sushi Huh might be a good choice for getting the programs you need to clean out that
