International rules baseball (i.e., the Olympics and the like) have the same rule.

In the 19th century they played baseball on ice all the time. That's where the rule about running through first base comes from, because obviously you don't want anyone sliding at any base if they've got ice skates on. You could get Malarchuked that way.
