That's exactly what I guessed people might think, who had actually never heard of R+L=J before. That this was Ned's lover presenting their child. It seems the writers are pretty reliant on fan knowledge of the backstory, so there are probably a lot of lost viewers.

Exactly. People say "that wasn't in the book" but what was in the book was more awful by a factor of 10, it just didn't happen to Sansa. I felt like they pulled back on the awful because it was a character we were invested in.
