Tech is a meritocracy. You either have the chops or you don’t. It’s not about the technical tests, it's about black men and women being encouraged to pursue technology and science as careers.

When it comes to the side of tech companies like twitter or tumblr or facebook I am on the “Who the fuck cares?” team.

Care to share Kinja’s non-writer staff demographics?

It’s also a circular problem of when there are black women qualified for the job, are they going to want to work for a company where they are not represented and are going to be “the token”?

Yeah, but if you look at the chart in the article that displayed all of the other tech companies, there are barely any black people in any of them.

I’m gonna do my usual rant whenever a tech company gets yelled at for not having enough minorities: It’s a pipeline problem and these articles should really be contextualized with the distribution of STEM degrees earned by minorities. I teach programming and CS at a large urban public university system, so one of

“The culprit is our educational system, not these companies.” <- agreed.

Not a lot of women, or black women, go into tech. Actual tech, blogging does not count as being a “woman in tech.”

If Twitter has knowingly discouraged black women from applying or unfairly rejected qualified black women, management is indeed racist. However, I wonder if the culprit is our educational system, not these particular companies.

My thoughts exactly. This may not be an internal issue that can just be flagged as “not enough diversity in the tech industry.”

25% of tech is Asian. Asians, including South Asians, are over represented in tech, so boiling it down to simple racism is an oversimplification. Do you think Google and Twitter are rejecting hundreds of black candidates who pass their very, very difficult tests? If so, they need to change. However, if they aren’t,

I wonder how many black woman have applied to work at Twitter. Meaning, has Twitter rejected hundreds of qualified black women on purpose and hired only Asian and white instead, or have there been very few qualified black women applicants?

Eh, I guess I wish it wasn’t just about men.

No, he was just black, so they would have treated him worse.

There’s actually far less violence in the US now than at anytime in the past half century. However, you wouldn’t know it due to the speed of reporting. Not faulting reporters in any way- they’re doing their job- but some perspective is always nice. Violence continues to drop every year at a pretty good clip.

I’m about to turn 34, my only shot is with 35-year old women. Wamp-wamp. When I was on OKC, circa 31-32, my searchable age range was 24-40. I’m sure plenty of 20-21 year old women were attractive but I was trying to be realistic about social/cultural/lifestyle compatibility. (note: I was also looking to date, not for

It’s unfortunate, but looks will always be men’s main priority in picking dates. Everything else is secondary. Personality, common interests, kindness, etc. just help to narrow down which 20 year old to pursue first.

It's men's ideal age for a date, those they consider the most attractive. Deep down they probably know they'll have to settle for someone born within their own decade

Why do men’s ideal preferences matter so much anyway?”
